Massage is one of the oldest healing arts: Chinese records dating back 3,000 years document its use; the ancient Hindus, Persians and Egyptians applied forms of massage for many ailments; and Hippocrates wrote papers recommending the use of rubbing and friction for joint and circulatory problems. Today, the benefits of massage are varied and far-reaching. As an accepted part of many physical rehabilitation programs, massage therapy has also proven beneficial for many chronic conditions, including low back pain, arthritis, bursitis, fatigue, high blood pressure, diabetes, immunity suppression, infertility, smoking cessation, depression, and more. And, as many millions will attest, massage also helps relieve the stress and tension of everyday living that can lead to disease and illness.
East West College is a professional school whose mission is to educate and enrich our community through the art and science of massage therapy. Founded over forty years ago, East West has become one of the largest, privately-owned massage schools in the U.S. The massage board pass rate for East West graduates on the Oregon licensing exams is over 90% which is well above the national level. Located in a beautiful 54,000 square foot campus a block from the Oregon Convention Center, it is easily accessible by all major public and private transportation lines.
As a part of its services, East West has a massage therapy clinic available to the public at affordable prices. The beautifully designed clinic features a comfortable waiting room, private (curtained) massage booths, and flexible hours. Offering primarily relaxing Swedish massage, its student therapists are thoroughly trained in providing a comfortable treatment supervised by an experienced instructor. Many of our alumni therapists have advanced training in a variety of massage treatments and offer a diverse range of modalities.
Student Massage
The highlight of a student’s program is giving massage to the public in our clinic. The clinic is supervised by an experienced instructor and offers students the opportunity to practice their new skills on adults 18 and older. Appointments generally last 65 minutes and includes an intake interview, a massage of 45-50 minutes, and an exit interview. After the massage, the client is given the opportunity to provide written feedback to the student as a part of their learning experience. By Oregon law, students are not allowed to be compensated for massages nor can they receive tips until they are licensed. The fee for the student massage session pays only for its associated costs.
